'Purify the heart' means to erase from its love and attachment to the world and its things, as well as the elimination of all worldly sorrow that does not involve more than worry and sadness for futile things.
The term ‘heart’ has a double meaning here: In a sense, it is named the carnal mass located on the left side of the chest. It is a hollow organ filled with blood and is considered the origin of the spirit – This is in the medical sense. This heart of flesh is not what interests us here. The heart of which we speak is the receptacle of the grace of Allah and is of spiritual order in substance. This spiritual substance is the essence of the human being. This is the heart that can be subject to admonition, censorship, and punishment. Its relationship with the heart of flesh is the same as that which has an accident with the body. In the same way in which an attribute is related to the substance to which it is attributed. Or as the relationship that there is between an object and space, it occupies in it or that of the instrument with the man who touches it. They argue that according to the infinite wisdom of Allah, the vast majority of men are involved in worldly affairs, concerned with material things, subject to problems and dislikes. The more time man devotes to pampering his body and keeping up appearances, the more his mental state deteriorates, the more his spiritual faculties decline. The purity and the light of the heart weaken and the dirt and darkness increase in him. For this reason, it is why austerity and sobriety are the conditions of spiritual progress. The ignorant person is not aware of his reality, considers his physical body as his essence ignoring the simple and abstract nature of his spiritual heart. What the Quran says? In this regard, the Quran says, "Yes, but you got carried away by temptation, you delayed and doubted and your vain desires deceived you until the design of Allah was fulfilled. And the Deceiver deceived you regarding Allah". The cleansing of the heart is impossible unless the love and attachment of the world disappear from it. The world itself is not negligible, because he is ‘the farm or the farmland for the Hereafter’ and a means to reach it. But love and attachment to the world is an obstacle. This is the meaning of the hadith of the Prophet: "Love for the world is the root of all evil" Love here means attachment, it is not something opposed to hate (because hate is also an attachment), but its meaning has to be understood as detachment. The world has its value within Sufism because it is the world that allows us to rise to the noblest planes of the spirit. The world can lift man to the highest peaks of the spirit, or he can sink him to the deepest valleys of degradation. The man who uses the world as a means of spiritual realisation does not merely concentrate on the evanescent pleasures of life. But always keep in mind the divine warning contained in the words that unbelievers will hear, "You exhausted your good things in the life of the world and you fully enjoyed them".
